5.5 The Low Voltage Directive

The Low Voltage Directive

2014/35/EU: Low Voltage Directive
By Koos Gouws

The main idea behind CE marking products distributed in Europe is to reduce trade barriers between member states of the European Union.
The low voltage directive provides the uniform requirements regarding the health and safety of persons using or who are in contact with or in the vicinity where low voltage electrical equipment is used. Low voltage equipment includes all equipment powered by between 50V and 1000V AC, or 75V and 1500V DC.
The directive applies to a wide range of electrical equipment. The range includes, but is not limited to:
        • Household appliances
        • Electrical cables
        • Power supply units
        • Laser equipment
        • Electrical equipment such as fuses, etc
        • Lighting
        • Etc
While the provisions of the low voltage directive are important for electrically powered machinery, CE Marking is primarily dictated to by the machinery directive (2006/42/EC). The essential health and safety requirements of the low voltage directive must also be satisfied. CE Marking application is in these cases done in accordance with the machinery directive.
CE is an abbreviation for "Conformité Européene". Application of the CE Mark shows that the manufacturer has submitted a declaration of conformity with the essential requirements for low voltage equipment.
Conformity to the essential requirements must be proven, and a risk assessment is required. A technical file is compiled.
SHEQ Management Systems consults to organizations regarding conformance to the requirements of the low voltage directive. We ensure that the process is streamlined, by providing training, advice on the requirements of the directive (legal and technical), assisting with the risk assessment and risk management, as well as with drawing up the declaration of conformity.
We also assist with locating a suitable notified body (when required), and maintain communication regarding compliance of the product with the notified body, serving as a link between the manufacturer and the notified body.
A full documentation pack is delivered, including all the required documents.
